American silver overlay glass trivet

Year: c1920
Place: USA
Product ID SS136-10
Diameter 200mm (8")

This is a beautiful octagonal trivet, decorated with hand engraved silver overlay panels of alternating lily pad and reed motifs and stamped sterling.

Silver was used to decorate bronze, copper and earthenware for hundreds of years but silver overlaid on glass was discovered in the late 19th century.  In 1889 Oscar Pierre Erard of Birmingham, England developed an effective method of electroplating silver on glass and porcelain, but it was American John Scharling who perfected and patented the electroplating procedure in 1894.

By 1895 the Russians, Czechs, Italians, French, English, Germans and Austrians were producing exciting glassware with sterling silver overlay but it was the American makers who were the most prolific and creators of the finest examples.   Up until the 1930s this elegant and exciting combination of the glassmaker and silversmith’s art was a significant decorative fashion.
