Pair of large 7-light Portuguese silver-gilt candelabra
Pair of large 7-light Portuguese silver-gilt candelabra
Considered one of the most beautiful 18th century French candlestick patterns, this pair of silver-gilt candelabra was made after a pair supplied by François-Thomas Germain in 1757-58 to King José I of Portugal.
This is a magnificent pair of 7-light, silver-gilt candelabra sitting on shaped circular cast bases decorated with foliage, shells and rocaille. The cast baluster stems feature foliage and flowers and further leaf swags.
The six branches are each lavishly cast with foliage and applied with flowers, terminating in foliage and flower-cast sockets, and with detachable fluted wax-pans, with similar central branches.
The bases are modelled after a design traditionally attributed to Thomas Germain and often made by Louis Lenhendrick.
Provenance: with Asprey, New Bond Street, London, December 1979.
