Superb late Victorian antique silver monteith bowl in the style of 1720's. The body is hand chased and has applied cast and finely detailed lion mask mounts holding the handles.

Devised in the last two decades of the seventeenth century, the monteith was originally made to rinse and cool wine glasses. The scalloped rim, fluted body and lion's head ring handles are typical of the styling and the bowl rests on a foot-ring or splayed-foot, decorated with gadrooning, embossing or vertical fluting. The scalloped ornamental rim was designed to support wine glass stems - suspended by their bases - allowing the bowls of the glasses to cool in a bath of iced water while the foot of the glass remained dry. In later years, the scalloped rim or crown became detachable changing its function to become a punch bowl when the rim was removed.

It is believed the monteith derives its name after a Scottish eccentric “gentlemen of fashion” named Monteith or Monteigh, who sang in the taverns and was remarkable for wearing a scalloped coat.
