A wonderfully characterful model of a silver British bulldog that is authentically cast in sterling silver and has a detachable head so that it could be imported into Britain without duty. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries there was a high tax on luxury goods, but if an item could be classified as a useful piece it could be brought into the country without duty. In the case of this model the dog’s head is removable so that the piece could therefore be classified as a box. The dog bears an English import mark for 1910.
