A magnificent hallmarked silver model of a stylised galleon in full sail, on four rolling wheels. The hull is chased with scenes of Neptune and his entourage on a seascape, with a cast figure of Neptune also astride the bowsprit. The deck is adorned with canons and figures of sailors in battle. Usually crafted in silver, silver-gilt or gold, nefs were made as extravagant and opulent table centrepieces as far back as the Middle Ages and traditionally placed in front of the guest of highest status as a token of respect. This late Victorian piece is on an unusually large scale and is one of the grandest examples we have ever seen. Müller's high quality imports became very desirable, yet sales suffered due to the heavy tax imposed on the import of silver models. In order to avoid this tax, pieces were made as items that had some practical use such as holding salt or spices. This model was made in Germany and bears import hallmarks for Chester.
