Rare pair of 1st Standard (950) French antique silver pepper pots realistically modelled as penguins. They are cast and finely hand-chased to give a lifelike textured feather-effect finish. Models of penguins are unusual and this is a particularly fine pair.

The silver bases are removable so they can be filled with pepper which is then shaken through the open beaks.

Known as the king of spices, pepper is one of the oldest and most popular spices in the world as well as the most widely traded. Pepper was so valuable that in ancient Greece and Rome it was used as currency, and during the Middle Ages peppercorns were accepted in lieu of money for dowries, rent and taxes.
