Large and rare, hand-raised antique silver black jack or bombard water jug modelled on an original leather jug and a faithful recreation in all respects. The form, the leather stitching and the satin finish are beautifully executed and the silver jug has a large capacity of 3 litres or 5¼ imperial pints

Widely used in ale houses and farms from the 12th to18th centuries, black jacks and bombards were resin-lined leather tankards - the bombard being a giant jack - modelled on those used in ale and country houses with their own brewing facility where ale would be brought to the table from the cellar. The integral handle gave the jug greater strength.
