George III hand-engraved silver goblet

Impressive George III silver goblet with original gilded interior. In a neoclassical design, the lower half of the bowl is hand-chased with vertical acanthus leaves, while the rim is hand-engraved with classical Greek patterns; all neoclassical design cues of the period.

With its flat base, thin stem and conical bowl, the basic goblet shape has remained almost entirely unchanged in its form for centuries. When made in silver the goblet is often called a wine cup.

Spanning the years between 1760 and 1830 (approximately) the neoclassical style of design dominated Europe and America. Neoclassicism was born in Rome in the before spreading throughout Europe. It is the name given to Western movements in the arts and architecture that draw inspiration from the classical art and culture of Ancient Greece or Rome.
