1st standard French silver gilt beaker

1st standard French silver gilt beaker

Sold

A delightful 1st standard French silver beaker with finely detailed parcel-gilt decorations and the body features a woven basket-weave effect.

1st standard is indicated by the Minerva head purity mark and confirms that a piece is .950 or 950/1000 - a higher silver content than English sterling which is .925 or 925/1000

Parcel-gilt (partial gilt) objects are gilded over part of their surface, so decorative patterns or images are made by featuring a combination of gilt and silver areas. An alternative term for silver-gilt is the French word vermeil which came into use in English in the 19th century but mostly in American English.
