Victorian etched glass & silver wine jug

Victorian etched glass & silver wine jug

Sold

Antique Victorian claret wine jug fitted with silver mounts. The hand-blown glass body is hand etched with a lattice and grapevine pattern, and has a starburst cut into the base. The silver flip cover and collar are hand chased with the same design as the glass body. The silver scroll handle is adorned with cast foliage and beads while the bead pattern borders continue around the cover, collar and girdle.

The spout is in the form of a Bacchus or Dionysys mask depending on whether you favour the Greek or Roman gods' names. Bacchus was the Roman god of wine, while for the Greeks, the god of wine and pleasure was called Dionysus, the son of the supreme god Zeus.
