5670
Hand-forged, one-date-and-maker set of sterling silver Rattail pattern cutlery made by George Lambert of London. It is a wonderfully heavy example of the classic four-prong Rattail pattern, in superb condition, and all original apart from one teaspoon which has been replaced.
This set comprises:
18 table forks
18 dessert forks
18 dessert spoons
12 tablespoons
12 teaspoons (1 x Goldsmiths & Silversmiths 1888)
Since antique knives of any pattern rarely survive, we complete this cutlery set with 18 pairs of sterling silver table and dessert knives in the Rattail, Old English or Old English Pip patterns, fitted with stainless steel blades making them suitable for putting in the dishwasher.
Rattail is the oldest of the English designs dating from the early 1700s with the distinctive rat tail on the backs of the spoon bowls and forks. This feature developed in an age when craftsmen made spoons in two pieces joining the bowl and the handle together by means of soldering using a tapered tail as additional strength to the joint. This design also features a prominent rib down the front of the handle and continues to be a popular design to the present day.
