Decorative antique silver photograph frame, of heart-shaped form and decorated with pierced and embossed classical motifs, musical instruments and foliate scroll borders. It has a central, vacant, domed cartouche - ideal for engraving - and the frame is mounted on a sympathetically replaced blue velvet back and easel. The approximate aperture measurements are 85mm x 110mm (3¼" x 4¼")

The creation of the iconic heart shape to signify love was first reported at the end of the Middle Ages. It gained popularity in the 15th and 16th centuries and has featured widely used in decorative design throughout subsequent centuries, reaching a peak of deep significance in 18th and 19th century decorative silverware and jewellery.
