An impressive set of four Victorian silver candlesticks in the Corinthian style. The square bases and removable nozzles have bold gadroon edges along with acanthus leaf corners and scroll motifs. The columns are fluted in the classical manner.

The Corinthian column is almost always fluted and is the most ornate, slender and sleek of the three Greek architectural orders; the other two being Ionic and Doric. Corinthian are distinguished by a decorative, bell-shaped capital with volutes, two rows of acanthus leaves and an elaborate cornice.

Neoclassicism is the 18th and 19th century movement that developed in Europe as a reaction to the excesses of Baroque and Rococo. The movement sought to return to the classical beauty and magnificence of the Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire and based on simplicity and symmetry. Classical motifs included ribbon-tied festoons, palm leaves, swags and hanging garlands. Urns and vase shapes all featured, as did Corinthian, Ionic and Doric columns.
