Arts & Crafts hammered silver comport

In the Arts & Crafts style, this is a large, handmade, Edwardian silver comport with a circular base with raised centre and surmounted by an acorn finial, three cast curving supports in the form of naturalistic leaves, surmounted by a shallow bowl.  Both base and bowl are hand hammered to create a multi-faceted appearance and this antique comport is suitable for use as a fruit bowl or to hold a flower arrangement.

The Arts & Crafts movement emerged from a disenchantment with the impersonal, mechanised direction of society in the 19th century and advocated a return to a simpler, more fulfilling way of living. The movement was admired for its use of high quality materials and for its emphasis on utility in design.
