Set of Victorian hand-forged Fiddle Thread & Shell sterling silver cutlery for 12
Set of Victorian hand-forged Fiddle Thread & Shell sterling silver cutlery for 12
1799
Victorian hand-forged, double-struck silver cutlery set for 12 settings, made by George Adams, one of the best English cutlery makers of the 19th century. Double-struck indicates that the design is struck on the front and back of each piece, requiring a heavier gauge of silver and therefore a sign of superior quality.
A charming design with the fiddle shape, thread borders and shell motif and on the reverse, shells appear on the heads and heels.
Dating from about 1810, Fiddle Thread & Shell flatware gained popularity in colonial America and is still very popular today.
The set was made in the mid-19th-century and bears a family crest of a candlestick featuring a lit candle, with the motto UT PROSIM (That I may be of use), for the Foley, Grigg or Greenwood families.
The set comprises:
12 table forks
12 dessert forks
12 table soup spoons
12 dessert spoons
12 teaspoons
Since antique knives rarely survive, this service is completed with 12 pairs of modern Old English Thread & Shell silver table and dessert knives with stainless steel blades making them dishwasher-safe.
