Large, traditional antique silver-gilt card case, engraved through the gilding with finely detailed oak leaves, acorns and branches, with a bird chasing an insect on one side, birds on branches of buds, blossoms, cherry blossoms and catkins in the Aesthetic style. The gilding is original.

Although visiting cards originated in China in the 15th century, in 18th, 19th and 20th century Europe, visiting cards were used by the aristocracy and upper classes to announce social visits or convey condolences, and they were kept in decorative cases. The materials and craftsmanship of a case reflected the owner's status and social standing, with some cases being works of art themselves, reflecting Victorian and Edwardian fascination with decoration, and were often made from materials like gold, silver, agate, or leather.
