Pair of George III style silver salt cellars

Sold

Pair of cauldron-shaped antique silver salt cellars, each sitting on three hoof supports and decorated with a wavy gadroon pattern border. The salts are fitted with blue glass liners to protect the silver from the salt.

Since early Greek and Roman times, and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Usually made of silver, they were often decorated in motifs of the sea.
