This simple oval silver-plated biscuit box has a band of attractive hand-pierced decoration around the rim. The neatly fitting lid keeps the biscuits dry and is surmounted by an oval wood finial.

Sterling silver biscuit boxes emerged in the Victorian era (post-1860s) as stylish containers to keep biscuits fresh and sometimes featuring novelty designs like drums or books. They became an integral part of the silver tea sets and famous makers such as Elkington & Co produced elaborate folding or ornamental versions to warm biscuits by the fire.
