Square silver tea caddy

Square silver tea caddy

Sold

Handmade and hand engraved silver tea caddy in the style that would have been seen in the late 18th century. The silver caddy's body is finely hand engraved around the edges with delicate scrolling foliage, and the lid is surmounted with a detachable pineapple ivory and silver finial. Note the jeweller's flush hinge, a mark of quality silversmithing.

With an association to warmth and friendliness, pineapples were often used as the "crowning" piece in large displays of food. The pineapple symbol was also used frequently in the 18th and 19th centuries to decorate bed posts, tablecloths, napkins, and anything associated with welcoming guests.
