Pair of George III antique sterling silver candlesticks
8986
Pair of heavy-gauge antique sterling silver candlesticks made during the latter part of the 18th century. The elegant fluted and tapering stems and bases, as well as the removable nozzles, are decorated with thread pattern mounts. Each candlestick is engraved with the family coat of arms belonging to Thornton Roger Trevelyan, and engraved with the family motto "Tyme Tryeth Troth" which translates to "time is running out".
Neoclassicism is the 18th and 19th century movement that developed in Europe as a reaction to the excesses of Baroque and Rococo styles that were dominant in the previous era. The movement sought to return to the classical beauty and magnificence of the Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.
