Set four antique silver swan dishes

Set four antique silver swan dishes

Sold

Set of four unusual and elegantly-designed, antique silver dishes, or decorative salt cellars, in the form of swans. Each salt cellar has a cast and hand chased handle in the form of a swan with neck bowed and wings outstretched. The boat shaped tilting bowls rest on spreading oval bases and the interiors are gilded to protect the silver from corrosion and to add a touch opulence.

Swans are often associated with affairs of the heart; a symbol of love or fidelity because of their long-lasting, apparently monogamous relationships. Since ancient times, swans have been associated with tranquillity and nobility, featuring in mythology and folklore around the world. Their high status is likely to have originated because of their perceived beauty and natural behaviour; they are solitary birds, strong and aggressively protective of their young but at the same time graceful and elegant on the water.
