Pair George III silver salt cellars

Pair George III silver salt cellars

Sold

Classic pair of George III period cauldron-style salt cellars with typical delicate rope pattern rims and hoof and fan flute supports. The interiors are gilded to protect the silver from the salt.

Since early Greek and Roman times and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Usually made of silver, they were often decorated in motifs of the sea.
