Edwardian glass claret jug with silver mounts

Edwardian glass claret jug with silver mounts

Sold

A graceful antique Arts & Crafts style silver and glass wine jug from the Edwardian period at the start of the 20th century. The hand-blown glass body is cut with a starburst pattern on the base, the silver collar, hinged domed cover and tapering handle have a naturalistic, flowing form.  The cover has a scrolled openwork cast thumbpiece.

The Arts & Crafts movement emerged from a disenchantment with the impersonal, mechanised direction of society in the 19th century, and sought to return to a simpler, more fulfilling way of living. The movement was admired for its use of high quality materials and for its emphasis on utility in design.
