Superb-quality, oval and shaped antique silver-gilt wine cistern of substantial quality and weight, resting on lion's paws feet. As monumental works of silver, wine cisterns are the grandest example of wine coolers . Like this unique cistern, many were made for royal or aristocratic households and engraved with armorial arms and mottos.

The body is elongated with foliage and floral decorations around a Rococo Revival cartouche featuring what appears to be the arms of Campbell, Duke of Argyll.

From the evidence of the arms alone this bowl was either in the possession of a gentleman of the Campbell family or that the bowl commemorated the family in some way. At first glance, the arms and crest, together with the motto are the same as borne by the Chief of the Clan Campbell, His Grace The Duke of Argyll, but with the absence of the Duke's coronet of rank, peer's helm and supporters.

The helmet seen here is that of an esquire or gentleman. Given that are no marks of cadency or any other evidence that the gentleman concerned matriculated his arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh it is to be assumed that the gentleman in question merely adopted these arms or at the very least never got round to matriculating his arms anew at Lyon Court as per the Law of Arms in Scotland. It is therefore difficult to pinpoint with any certainty an exact candidate for the ownership of this bowl without corroborating evidence.

The provenance of aristocratic origins has an impact on the value of the piece.
