Charming and quite unusual handmade and hand pierced antique sterling silver cream jug, created in the neoclassical style and featuring elegant geometric patterns. The jug is fitted with a cranberry glass liner which shows off the fine pierced decoration beautifully. The glass is securely fixed and screwed onto the base.

Neoclassicism was a design style that emerged in Britain and France in the 1750s, reached its height in the 1780s and '90s, and lasted until the 1840s and '50s. Like the Classical Greco-Roman art it was trying to emulate, Neoclassicism can be loosely defined by its focus on harmony, simplicity, proportion and symmetry. Gone are the decorative scrolls and frills of the Baroque and Rococo periods which preceded it: Neoclassicism was about clean, straight lines, simple, geometric motifs, and plain, block colours. Swags and festoons; laurel wreaths; Classical masks; mythological and real creatures, became familiar design cues of the movement.
