Antique Louis pattern silver tea & coffee set

Antique Louis pattern silver tea & coffee set

Sold

Antique Victorian four-piece silver tea and coffee set comprising teapot, coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl, in a design referred to as the Louis pattern, named after the Sun King, Louis XIV of France

Reflecting Louis's extravagances, all pieces of this silver tea and coffee service are finely hand chased in high relief with elaborate foliage and floral work. They are mounted on open-work, cast supports decorated with scrolls and beading. The rims have applied cast scroll and leaf mounts, the handles adorned with acanthus leaf thumb-pieces. The silver milk jug and sugar bowl have decorative gilded interiors.

The tea and coffee pots each have detachable cast eagle finials surmounting domed covers and ornate swan-neck spouts with eagle head openings and sun masks at their bases. The set is of a heavier gauge than most in this design and in excellent and original condition.
